Q1: How do online therapy sessions work?
A: Online therapy sessions are conducted either via telephone or using secure video conferencing platforms. All you need is a stable internet connection, a device with a camera, and a quiet, private space where you can speak confidentially.
Q2: Is therapy confidential?
A: Yes, therapy is confidential but there are exceptions. Confidentiality means that anything you share in therapy will not be disclosed to anyone else without your consent. I may be required to break confidentiality if I consider that there is a risk you may harm yourself or others. I am required to break confidentiality if I become aware of acts of terrorism, safeguarding issues, illegal activity, or misuse of vulnerable adults. You should therefore be cautious about sharing any information with me that may mean I have to break confidentiality. If I am considering breaking confidentiality for the reasons outlined, I will normally try to discuss this with you first, but I have the right to share this information without consent in order to protect you or others. This will be explained to you in detail during our first session. Your trust and privacy are paramount to the therapeutic process.
Q3: What can I expect during my first session?
A: During the first session, we will discuss your reasons for seeking therapy and the difficulties that you have been experiencing. We will begin discussing what you are hoping to get from therapy (your therapy goals) and you will be given some time to think about this before your second session where this will be discussed further. These initial sessions help us to develop a personalised plan for your therapy.
Q4: How long does CBT usually take?
A: The length of CBT varies depending on the individual and the difficulties being addressed. On average, CBT treatment can range from 8 to 20 sessions.
